Read The Red Earth Online by Binh Tu Tran | Books - Written by Scribd Editors In 1927, a young man named Tran Tu Binh was a laborer at Phu Rieng, a French rubber plantation in colonial Vietnam. He was one of 17,606 workers. In The Red Earth: A Vietnamese Memoir of Life on a Colonial Rubber Plantation, Binh Tu Tran tells readers what it was like to work at this plantation and how he became involved in revolutionary politics. Unlike many of his peers at the plantation, Tran could read the contracts stating how working conditions should be. Though they were promised meals and good treatment, many laborers were on the brink of starvation, they were beaten (sometimes to death), rape was a common occurrence… the list of atrocities goes on. To stop the inhumane treatment of workers, Tran helped form a union and organize a strike. This memoir shows readers what life was like inside the rubber plantations in Vietnam and how one man devoted his life to achieving fair treatment for himself and his fellow laborers.
